Patriotic British Music from Gilbert and Sullivan
Obviously, what can count as "patriotic" here is debatable, but these are, if anything, in parodic imitation of fervant love for that glorious country called Great Britain, to which some add, but others do not, Ireland.
Songs are:
1. A British Tar
2. The Soldiers of our Queen
3. If you want a receipt for that popular mystery
4. Loudly let the trumpet bray!
5. When Britain really ruled the waves
6. We ship'd, d'you see
7. When our gallant Norman foes
8. My subjects all, it is your wish emphatic
9. Ah, gallant soldier brave and true
10. And lastly I present to you Great Britain's greatest boast
11. Society has quite forsaken
12. A wonderful joy our eyes to bless
13. There's a little group of isle beyond the wave

When you've shouted "Rule Britannia": when you've sung "God Save the Queen" When you've finished killing Kruger with your mouth: Will you kindly drop a shilling in my little tambourine For a gentleman in khaki ordered South? He's an absent-minded beggar and his weaknesses are great: But we and Paul must take him as we find him: He is out on active service wiping something off a slate: And he's ...

By the old Moulmein Pagoda, lookin' lazy at the sea, There's a Burma girl a-settin', and I know she thinks o' me; For the wind is in the palm-trees, and the Temple-bells they say: "Come you back, you British soldier; come you back to Mandalay!" Come you back to Mandalay, Where the old Flotilla lay: Can't you 'ear their paddles chunkin' from Rangoon to Mandalay? On the road to Mandalay, Where th...

I have made for you a song, And it may be right or wrong, But only you can tell me if it's true; I have tried for to explain Both your pleasure and your pain, And, Thomas, here's my best respects to you! O there'll surely come a day When they'll give you all your pay, And treat you as a Christian ought to do; So, until that day comes round, Heaven keep you safe and sound, And, Thomas, here's my...

In good King Charles's golden days, When loyalty had no harm meant; A zealous high-church man I was, And so I got preferment. To teach my flock I never missed, Kings are by God appointed, And those are damn'd that do resist, And touch the Lord's anointed. And this is the law, I will maintain Unto my dying day, Sir. That whatsoever King shall reign, I will be the Vicar of Bray, Sir! When Royal James obtained the throne, And popery came in fashion; The Penal Laws I booted down, And read the Declaration: The Church of Rome I found would fit Full well my constitution, And had become a Jesuit, But for the revolution. And this is law, I will maintain Unto my dying day, Sir. That whatsoever King shall reign, I will be the Vicar of Bray, Sir! When William was our King declared, To ease the nation's grievance, With this new wind about I steered, And swore to him allegiance: Old principles I did revoke, Set conscience at a distance, Passive obedience was a joke, And pish is non-resistance. And this is law, I will maintain Unto my dying day, Sir. That whatsoever King shall reign, I will be the Vicar of Bray, Sir! When gracious Anne ascendes the throne, Then Church of England's glory, Another face of things was seen, And I became a Tory: Occasional conformists base I damn'd there moderation, And thought the Church in danger was, From such prevarication. And this is law, I will maintain Unto my dying day, Sir. That whatsoever King shall reign, I will be the Vicar of Bray, Sir! When George in pudding time came o'er, And moderate men looked big, Sir, I turned cat in pan once more, And then became a Whig, Sir. And so preferment I procur'd, By our faith's great defender And almost every day abjur'd The Pope, and the Pretender. And this is law, I will maintain Unto my dying day, Sir. That whatsoever King shall reign, I will be the Vicar of Bray, Sir! The Illustrious House of Hanover, And Protestant succession, To these I do allegiance swear, While they can keep possession: For by my faith, and loyalty, I never more will faulter, But George, my lawful king shall be, Until the time shall alter. And this is law, I will maintain Unto my dying day, Sir. That whatsoever King shall reign, I will be the Vicar of Bray, Sir!

"Here a sheer hulk lies poor Tom Bowling, The darling of our crew; No more he'll hear the tempest howling, For death has broach'd him to: His form was of the manliest beauty, His heart was kind and soft. Faithful, below, he did his duty, And now he's gone aloft, And now he's gone aloft. Tom never from his word departed, His virtues were so rare, His friends were many, and true-hearted, His Poll was kind and fair: And then he'd sing so blithe and jolly - Ah! many's the Time and oft - But mirth is turn'd to melancholy, For Tom is gone aloft, For Tom is gone aloft. Yet shall poor Tom find pleasant weather, When He, who all commands, Shall give, to call life's crew together, The word to pipe all hands: Thus death, who Kings and tars dispatches, In vain Tom's life has doff'd, For though his body's under hatches, His soul has gone aloft, His soul has gone aloft."

you seem to have missed off the end of act 1, it's a very important piece of the opera. Namely the bit where the fairies put Strephen into power as a left leaning politian inthe 1800s - all under their spell. Guilbert and Sullivan is excellent satire. To leave out bits isn't really fair. It's more clever than that- the British know how to laugh at themselves
